The laptop was not his. It came off the shared desk with an asset tag on the bottom, and he took it into the hot spring with him, because he takes everything into the hot spring with him, and because at that moment he was already in the hot spring.
He carried it to a small repair shop, signed the ticket, went back to the water and never collected it, so every file on that drive is public property now. Nothing about his face changed at any point in this story, and nothing about it has changed since.

The spring
He works from the water and always has. The laptop went in with him at 14:10, sat on the surface for eleven seconds, and then did not sit on the surface. He watched it go and did not put his mug down.
The shop
He carried it in wet, put it on the counter and signed the ticket without being asked twice. They said water damage in a voice people use for bad news. He said nothing at all, took the copy of the ticket and went back to the spring.
The leak
